Vuka u Senzele Day Care Centre is situated in Sogopje Village in Makgwareng, Limpopo. The village is ravaged by poverty, which inevitably leads to a variety of other social ills. Leading among them is teenage pregnancy.
When Selina Mamabolo opened her daycare centre in 2009, it was for these parents – who are still battling their way through high school – and parents who work hard every day to keep their households fed.
She started Vuka u Senzele in the garage of her home, and it is in this very garage where the team still nurtures and educates 57 of Segopje’s children under five. Their aim is to develop their students so that they can arrive in Grade R already used to a routine of learning.
When asked, Selina will proudly tell of how she and the centre’s two other caretakers speak English to the children on certain days of the week – an impressive task in a predominantly Sepedi-speaking community.
Vuka u Senzele receives no funding from the government and makes do with monthly fees from parents. The fee is R120 per child per month, but many parents cannot afford to pay this amount, and finances are a continuous struggle. The team dreams of someday moving out of the garage and into a building of their own.
