Florence Marema isn’t a spring chicken. She’s lived for quite a few years, and she has the back pain to prove it. She isn’t rich, not in money anyway. She would be well excused, in other words, to enjoy her golden years taking it slow.
Only, she doesn’t quite believe in taking things slow when there’s work to be done, and in Vondwe, her Limpopo village, there definitely is. Its children are vulnerable more often than not, with many of them under the care of their grandmothers or elder siblings.
Florence knows that she can’t fix all of that, but in 2017 she started working on what she can do: feeding them.
That, in addition to helping them with their homework, is what Florence and a group of 8 other Vondwe residents do for over 200 of the village’s children every weekday. With plates of pap made from donated maize meal and caring, open hearts, the team are doing the only thing they know how to do to make Vondwe better for its young people.
Though ‘centre’ is in their name, they don’t really have a centre they can call their own. They started out in Florence’s home, which soon became too small. The village’s chief agreed to let the team use a communal building temporarily, but that too isn’t quite ideal for their purposes.
Florence’s biggest wish is to be able to build a proper centre; a place that Vondwe’s children can call home, even just on weekday afternoons.
The team receives no funding at all and feeds all those hungry bellies with donations they work tirelessly to acquire.
