Tanganedzani Mutheiwana Community Crèche exists because of that age-old raison d’etre – necessity. It is indeed, Grace Masuvhelele would argue, the mother of invention. Her village – Tshimbupfe, in rural Limpopo, had no form of early childcare. Children got hurt often, and why wouldn’t they, when left to their own devices for long stretches of time while their parents worked.
Everyone was waiting for someone to do something, so in 2005 Grace became the someone and Tanganedzani Mutheiwana Community Crèche became the something.
The chief of Grace’s corner of Tshimbupfe gave her and her team the use of a local church, and it is there where the children of her area came to know, for the first time, what it felt like to have a group of friends and teachers helping them develop.
Grace is joined by 3 other caretakers, and together they gather 43 of Tshimbupfe’s young ones together for meals and play. Most importantly, the children are kept safe from the dangers that lurk outside.
Tanganedzani Mutheiwa receives a quarterly Social Development grant as well as a small monthly fee from each parent, but they continue to struggle.
