Farmworkers and their families in the wine-growing areas of the Western Cape have been trapped in poverty for many generations, the effects of which are evident… Poor and overcrowded accommodation, illiteracy, high school drop-out rates, alcoholism, domestic violence, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, unskilled young people and adults, HIV/AIDS, high rates of TB and some of the highest levels of children born with FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) in the world.
These overwhelming challenges result in communities deeply lacking in capacity, trapping them in a perpetuating cycle of poverty. And while these factors take their toll on all in the community, they have a shattering effect on the quality of life of children in particular.
Riebeeksrivier Pre-School forms part of the Goedgedacht Trust, which aims to transform rural communities, by offering the most recent generation of children the opportunity to become healthy, self- confident, educated young people, supporting them in breaking out of the damaging cycle of generational poverty.
In order to effectively break this cycle, one has to build a new generation, starting from when the mother is pregnant, all the way to when that child reaches adulthood. An adult with a completely different mindset and philosophy to their parents.
Riebeeksrivier Pre-School plays an integral part in this process by both providing much needed nutritional food every weekday, as well as guiding the children through the developmental stage of life, educating them and getting them school ready.
Once the children go on to Primary School they are healthy, educated and confident – meaning that there are fewer school dropouts, less teen-pregnancies and more high school graduates.
The positive effects of the Pre-School stretch further than only the children but uplift the entire community. When the parents see the growth and development of their children, they in turn begin to change their lifestyle and mindset, realizing that they have an influence and that a different future for their children is possible.
Because of the scale of the project, finances remain a constant struggle. The communities from where the children come are unable to meaningfully contribute financially. With many more communities in similar situations, the need is there to expand, but without proper support, this would unfortunately be impossible.
