For most people, 20 is an age of leisure and aimlessness, but Veronica Mosuane – founder of Randanani Day Care in Nellmapius, Mamelodi – isn’t most people. Having always wanted to be a teacher, she was on her way to study for a degree in Education when her father died, and paying university fees became an impossibility.
Instead, she received training at an ECD centre, and soon after opened Randanani Day Care at 20 years old.
Veronica was no stranger to the dangers lurking within the belly of Mamelodi, and knew then – as she knows now – that unspeakable things happen to young children who aren’t properly cared for.
30 years later, Randanani not only cares for nearly 60 children (ages 1 – 6) by providing healthy meals and learning opportunities, but seeks to make a small dent in the overwhelming rates of unemployment in the area by providing jobs to other caregivers. The Randanani team consists of 3 teachers and a cook.
For her students, some of whom are HIV positive, Veronica wants better than the Mamelodi norm. She and her team work towards this by giving their students a loving and constant routine in the midst of chaos.
