Few things make Zelda Nemuntandani happier than hearing from the primary school teachers of her past students. “Your children are different to the children from other centres,” they’ll say. “They are so well-developed.”
And she’ll smile because she knows how hard she worked to make this kind of development possible in Mapate.
The Limpopo village was without a day care centre until 2010, when Zelda rallied a few other community members and they started carving out Mapate Fhatanani Community Day Care Centre. Why a community day care centre? Because it’s in everyone’s interest that the village’s little ones have a safe, creative and loving space to grow up in.
Every weekday, 60 of these young Mapate residents make their way to the centre to get their learning, playing fill and spend time with their beloved caretakers.
It was these very caretakers, by the way, who built the building they all gather in. The piece of land was graciously given by the village chief, but the actual structure was built brick by brick by Zelda and other community members who wanted to help. Most of the materials were bought with monthly fees from parents, meaning that Zelda didn’t make much in the way of salaries… In fact, they still don’t.
