Rushana Parker is a helper; it’s in her blood. She and her family have been making up food parcels and little gifts to those in need since she can remember.
It’s the best way she knows to spend her time on this Earth.
Not a stranger to hardship herself after having grown up in Delft, known for its extreme poverty and vicious gangsterism, Rushana’s whole life has been a reaction against hunger and adversity that culminated in the establishment of Feed the Less Fortunate in 2014.
Not because she didn’t already have a full-time job – she did and still does – but because she believes we should make time for the truly important things.
Every month, Rushana and a team of volunteers focus their energies on one organization or group of people in need. To them they provide hampers of food and little gifts; basically, giving them the things that extreme hardship has taken away from them.
Though they are based in Rushana’s home in Mitchell’s Plain, orphanages, night shelters, schools and rehabilitation centres from all around Cape Town have been touched by the warmth of what Rushana and her team do.
In addition to feeding the less fortunate, the team aim to soothe them too these days by providing counselling to Mitchell’s Plain residents who require it; focusing mainly on abused women and children.
What takes up most of the team’s time is their tireless fundraising. To be able to afford feeding as many people as they do, the volunteers spend their days calling and meeting with potential donors. They do not receive regular funding and are completely kept going by individuals in their community and business owners from around Cape Town.
