Ethembeni Crèche and Pre-School sits in Umlazi Township, KwaZulu Natal, and has been around for quite some time; since 1973, in fact. It owes its existence to a group of concerned residents who worried that their corner of the township had no proper place of care for its littlest residents – the kids who weren’t going to formal schooling yet.
These days, the school is run by Ntombizonke Cebekhulu, who started as a teacher in 1994 and has since become Ethembeni’s principal. Under her steady hand, it has grown to something even more expansive than its original founders could have imagined. With 120 students and a staff of 8 (many of whom are well-trained in early childhood education), Ethembeni Crèche and Pre-School has become a beacon of hope for the township’s little ones.
Here, children can come and know that no matter what is happening at home, a bright future is being foreseen for them by their loving caretakers. The team receives monthly help from the Department of Social Development, but even with the added income of fees from parents, most months are a financial struggle. Ntombizonke and her staff don’t get paid liveable salaries – something you would be helping towards if you were to donate.
