Many children in Mokopane, Limpopo, spend most of their time on the streets as their parents are absent during the day, with a number of them not wanting to attend school. Through this, children form groups where they peer pressure each other into committing crimes such as pickpocketing in order to earn money to buy food, resulting in a dangerous environment for both themselves and the rest of the community.
Minah Kekana noticed the general lifestyle of the children in the community, and being driven by the desire to help the children, thought about what she could do to help. She single-handedly went to Pretoria to register Bophelong Care Centre centre as an NGO and from then on has been doing nothing but provide and care for her 195 beneficiaries.
Bophelong Care Centre provides a place, which is in the name itself, “A place where children are given the chance to live.” It is a safe environment where children can come to after school and receive help with their homework as well as a meal and partake in activities.
When the idea was first pitched, Minah received much support from the municipality as they donated tables and chairs, however they no longer receive any external funding. If they were to receive adequate funding, they hope to continue providing and caring for the children of the community and through this, create a home that is safe for everyone.
